COVE Coaching Model

COVE is a recent innovation developed by Tom O’Connor and Brad Bogue. In essence, COVE is a basic coaching model we refer to as Coaching Options that are Versatile and Effective (COVE). Transforming Communication infuses COVE into all of our coaching. The COVE model integrates Role Clarification techniques with Michael Stanier’s Seven Question model presented in his book “The Coaching Habit”. These are powerful questions that dovetail perfectly with the four processes of Motivational Interviewing (MI), one or two questions per process. Moving through the MI processes sets the stage for the third and final component, skill rehearsal facets of the emergent target behavior or change goal.

Not only do we provide individual and group coaching with COVE as our foundation, but we support agencies in becoming proficient in providing COVE coaching to their staff and clients. The vision behind COVE is building agency-wide coaching capacity, usually starting with upper management and then moving to front line staff. We recommend a holistic cycling-up process for best results which includes, but is not limited to: training, coding, coaching, and participation in communities of practice. The elegant simplicity of the model makes it accessible for all levels within your organization that can be customized to the needs of your agency.
